When Lucy Mangan was little, stories were everything. They opened up different worlds and cast new light on this one. She was whisked away to Narnia, and Kirrin Island, and Wonderland. She ventured down rabbit holes and womble burrows into midnight gardens and chocolate factories. With Charlotte’s Web she discovered Death and with Judy Blume it was Boys. No wonder she only left the house for her weekly trip to the library. In Bookworm, Lucy brings the favorite characters of our collective childhoods back to life and disinters a few forgotten treasures poignantly, wittily using them to tell her own story, that of a born, and unrepentant, bookworm.
Lucy Mangan is a journalist - now the Guardian's television critic - and author. Her first book, Hopscotch & Handbags: the Truth About Being a Girl, came out in 2007, her latest in 2018 (Bookworm: a Memoir of Childhood Reading) and due in Ocotber 2021 is her debut novel whose title is currently being argued over. In between she has acquired a husband, a child, a house and two cats - not quite in that order - and a severe sleep deficit. But that's mainly because she won't stop reading til one o'clock in the morning now that her mother can't tell her off.
